Condor Conference!

HOLA. I have realized I have not written in a very long time –whoops. Time here has gone by so fast and my last weeks have been extra crazy with creating a manual for all the regulations in quarantine, making posters for my education program and making a last minute volunteer program. Furthermore, the Condor Conference happened, it was fantastic and I learned so much about the current conservation efforts in Ecuador (and around the world!). Many conservation groups gave presentations, including the National Aviary. We also officially released and opened Guambi’s new exhibit, a beautiful and large enclosure, and had a ton of press conferences.

HOLA. Entiendo que no esribí por mucho tiempo-whoops! Aquí, el tiempo ha pasado rápido y mis últimas semanas fueron locos con mi manul de cuarentena, mi programa de educación, y mi nuevo programa de voluntariado. Y la conferencia de condors pasó! Estuvo increíble, y yo aprendí sobre conservación en Ecuador (y en el mundo!). Muchos grupos de conservación dieron presentaciones, incluyendo el Aviario Nacional. También, liberamos Guambi en su nuevo refugio, muy grande y hermoso, y tuvimos muchas conferencias de prensa.

It’s weird to me that I have finished (almost!) all my projects for my internship. The quarantine manual contains detailed rules and regulations about conduct in our quarantine area, including cleaning and feeding. It was difficult for me because it had to be in both English and Spanish. It is meant to be a basic introduction for new workers or volunteers because quarantine is where we get all of our new animals and therefor can be one of the most contaminated areas. My other project, the education program, will be continued on by the nutritionist and our veterinarian who will be arriving this week. Soon, posters will also be placed in the zoo to aid this program!

Es extraño para mí que terminé (casi) todos mis proyectos para mi pasantía. El manual de cuarentena tien las instrucciones para la área de cuarantena, incluyendo limpieza y alimentación. Fue difícil para mi, porque es en Español e Inglés. Es un introducción para los nuevos trabajadores y voluntarios porque todos nuestros nuevos animales llegan aquí y es uno de los lugares más contagiosos de Amaru. Mi otro proyecto, el programa de educación, va a continuar por el nutricionista y nuestra veterinaria. Muy pronto, los posters se pondrán en Aamaru para ayudar a este programa!

 Finally in my last few days here I have also decided to start a volunteer program. In Cuenca, there are many retired ex-pats, and after talking to many, I realized many wanted to volunteer. Since then I have already recruited 4 volunteers, with possibly three more who are interested. My hope is they will help the staff with diets and enrichments. So far the volunteers seem very excited!

Finalmente en mis últimos días aquí también decidí comenzar un programa de voluntariado. En Cuenca, hay muchos “ex-pats”, y después hablar de con muchos de ellos, me di cuenta que muchos querían ser voluntarios. Ya reculté a cuatro voluntaries y es posible que tengo dos más! Espero que ellos van a ayudar con las dietas y enriquecimiento. Hasta ahora, ellos están contentos.

In two days I will be going on a short trip to see the Amazon and Baños, with my friend Anna and her family. I am super excited to see some more of the country, but sad that I am leaving so quickly and have to say goodbye to Amaru and my friends here. Overall, I have had an amazing experience, learned a new language, done and seen things I would never have been able to in the states, and made some lifelong friends.

En dos días, voy a ir en un viaje cortopara ver el Amazonas y Baños, con mi amiga y su familia. Estoy muy contenta para ver mas de Ecuador, pero estoy triste que necesito decir adios a Amaru y mis amigos. En general, tuve un una experiencia increíble, aprender un nuevo idioma, hechas y he vistas cosas que no puedo en los Estados y hice amigos para todo mi vida.

I will make one more post after my trip, and then it will be back to the states for me!
